Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis, otherwise known as trance, is a natural, pleasant and healthy state of relaxation and increased awareness. Since it’s a completely natural experience, it’s totally safe.
It may be surprising to learn that you experience trance states often during the course of your life. Everyday forms of hypnosis or trance can be driving on a journey that you’ve done many times where your mind seems to wander off for a few moments and you notice that you’ve arrived at your destination without remembering part of the journey; getting lost in the pages of a really good book, watching an absorbing film or television programme or even getting lost in a bit of gardening and suddenly realising that a few hours have passed instead of the ‘quick half hour’ you were going to spend weeding.
But to understand how hypnosis works, we must first understand how the mind works. In simple terms your mind consists of 2 parts. The conscious mind, and the unconscious (or subconscious) mind. I liken these parts of our mind to like an iceberg.
The part of the iceberg visible above the surface is your conscious mind. The portion below the surface is your unconscious mind. This part is larger, more powerful and has a great deal of influence over us even though we are not aware of it.
The conscious mind is the part that is conscious and holding your attention now. It does all the thinking, the interpretation, reasoning and analysis. The unconscious mind functions as the memory bank, controlling emotions, imagination and habits.
Your unconscious also takes care of all the stuff you do automatically. You don’t actively have to remember to breath, blink or beat your heart – your unconscious mind does that for you without you even thinking about it. You don’t think through every little thing you do while driving a car, you just do it automatically even though there are several different things that you do at once, to safely drive.
Your unconscious mind holds the vast store of information that you have built up over the years that you use on a daily basis to solve problems, remember a telephone number or find your keys. It puts together plans and ideas, and runs them by your conscious mind. In other words the unconscious part of your mind does all your “behind the scenes” thinking.
In a nutshell, your unconscious mind is the real brains behind the operation – it does most of your thinking, and it decides a lot of what you do.
So, it’s the unconscious mind that holds the key to the changes that you want to make. It creates the changes you desire and transfers them into new behaviours or ways of thinking.
It really is as simple as that.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy allows you to focus on something in your life that you want to change
Because your unconscious mind is the seat of all your emotions, it directs nearly all your behaviour. Hypnosis is one of the few therapies that can actually bypass the conscious mind and connect with the unconscious to update desired changes.
Hypnotherapy is an effective way of removing unwanted habits, behaviours and responses and replacing the old outdated or unhealthy patterns with new ones, which are more desirable or appropriate to you.
Once you can effectively communicate with your unconscious mind, you can make many changes to your life. You can change almost any habit and any fear. You can become more confident, more successful, and more satisfied with life.
Hypnotherapy is solution focused which means that we work towards achieving your goals within an agreed timescale. Rather than delving into problems of the past, hypnotherapy puts the spotlight on the present and how you can make changes now to improve your current life and future plans.
Hypnotherapy is a two way process between the therapist and the client. You are in control the entire time because you can’t be hypnotised unless you agree and co-operate; also whilst hypnotised, nobody can make you do anything which you do not want to do.
